Lesson 1 - Properties of Water

Lesson Objectives

A. Content Objective:  The properties of water result in unique properties that are vital for living organisms.

B. Language Objective: Explain how hydrogen bonding and dipolarity explain the cohesive, adhesive, thermal and solvent properties of water.

C. Syllabus Details:

i. Water molecules are polar and hydrogen bonds form between them.

ii. Hydrogen bonding and dipolarity explain the cohesive, adhesive, thermal and solvent properties of water.

iii. Substances can be hydrophilic or hydrophobic.

iv. Application: Comparison of the thermal properties of water with those of methane.

v. Application: Use of water as a coolant in sweat.

vi. Application: Modes of transport of glucose, amino acids, cholesterol, fats, oxygen and sodium chloride in blood in relation to their solubility in water.
